In I don’t have to tell you what it is like having an ADHD child and trying to get help from the NHS. It’s a nightmare! Worse, the help varies depending where you live and some doctors do not accept it at all. If he does your child will probably be given Ritalin which can have side effects of insomnia, appetite disturbance, stomach ache, dizziness and hallucinations, delusional or mania in children who did not, prior to treatment, have psychotic or mental health problems.

As you can see, this does not cure the problem but only makes it worse.

I have had first hand experience of ADHD as my daughter was born with it in the 1980’s when it wasn’t recognised. She screamed at the top of her lungs and threw tantrums all day, every day and all night for two and a half years! My health visitor shrugged and said that that was just the way some children were. I already knew that white sugar was a factor and never let her have any sugar at all and on the days when she managed to grab a biscuit or a piece of chocolate she would do her Spiderman impression of climbing the wall!

By the time she was two and a half she started sleeping through the night. Just as well, as up until then, she had me out of bed four to six times and I could not have kept that up for any longer. If you are wondering why I didn’t use my homoeopathic skills then, the answer is, I’d only just started! But I used to literally walk around with a homoeopathic materia medica open at various pages and tried a large number of remedies. The problem was not being objective enough and this stopped me finding a suitable remedy.

In the meantime I tried to get help via the various NHS routes and eventually had her assessed by the local psychological boffins. They left us in a play room and watched through a 2-way mirror. My daughter behaved perfectly. It was a pity they were not with us a couple of weeks later when I had to go to a government department. Walking in to see an official she looked at us and said, ‘keep your daughter away from the desk please, it’s new.’ Right on cue she tried to bite it. I wanted to die on the spot.

Life continued to be hell. If you have an ADHD child I don’t need to spell it out: the refusals of food; the refusal to get dressed (I used to take her clothes out to the car and carry her out in her nightdress); the difficulty of having a telephone conversation; eating in peace; having a bath or even going to the loo without some catastrophe happening in my absence. The list is endless. She did get better eventually, but it took years and not through my efforts I’m sorry to say. She basically just grew out of it but by then I must have read and assimilated every homoeopathic remedy there was.

The result of it all was a self-help book for parents containing over 30 homoeopathic profiles for this condition and well as for under achievers. In this way parents can treat their children without waiting for ages for the NHS to do something. Homoeopathy is cheap, a small bottle costs about £5, it is safe and the remedy descriptions are easy to understand. The reason why there are such a wide variety of remedies is because everyone has different characteristics. True, nearly all AHDH children raise Cain. They throw tantrums, scream and refuse to co-operate, but some bite and kick, others throw off their clothes or moon, whilst still others may hurt animals and their siblings. Then there are the children who play pranks on their parents, hide or try to run away.

These differences in behaviour help to point to the right remedy along with how they react to being touched. You may have a child who wants consolation and to be cuddled, or one that hates to be touched and wants to be left alone. They can be remorseful and say sorry when they have behaved badly, others will never, ever say it and are never remorseful, indeed they may find hurting others enjoyable.

This, along with the modalities (in other words what makes them feel better or worse), coupled with their food likes and dislikes, helps to point to the correct remedy. If you have a child that wants to drink lemon juice neat, they are probably a Belladonna!

The book is not just for ADD/ADHD children, but for under-achievers, teenagers and those who mutilate themselves. Statistics say that 1 in 10 children, usually teenagers, who harm themselves. It also contains information on the causes of ADD/ADHD and there is a chapter for parents with suggestions for relaxation and how to cope generally. The book is called, ‘Does Your Child Have ADD?’ and is available post paid at £5.99. Email or phone for payment details.

Homoeopathic tablets are available from pharmacies and I also supply remedies in tablet or liquid form but only as part of a consultation. If you get stuck I’m only on the end of a phone line and you get the first 15 minutes free!
